If you suffer from musculoskeletal problems such inflammations, muscle strains, or runner’s knee, therapeutic ultrasound therapy may be a solution for you. Through use of an ultrasound probe that’s placed directly in contact with your skin, ultrasound therapy can help reduce swelling and chronic inflammation, as well as relieve pain in your back, neck, and shoulder. At Effective Chiropractic, we offer ultrasound therapy for a wide range of issues, so reach out to us today to see if ultrasound therapy is right for you.

How Does Ultrasound Therapy Work?

Since the 1950s, ultrasound therapy has been used to treat many musculoskeletal conditions. Ultrasound therapy works by using sound waves above the human range of hearing to stimulate and vibrate tissues inside the body. The sound waves are transmitted through a transducer head (which looks like a microphone), and then penetrate the softer tissues and cause microscopic vibrations inside the tissues. This will increase internal heat and friction, as well as cause the gas bubbles inside the tissues to expand and contract. When this happens, it leads to reduced tissue swelling, which in turn means reduced pain. Another main benefit of using ultrasound therapy is that it can penetrate up to three inches deep, breaking up scar tissue and reducing (or even eliminating) the pain caused by it.

The procedure is relatively quick and generally takes less than 10 minutes. Gel is applied to the target area, and a transducer head is used to generate the ultrasound therapy treatment. You may feel a mild pulsing or a little warmth, but it’s also common not to feel anything at all. However, ultrasound therapy should never be painful.

What conditions can ultrasound treat?

Therapeutic ultrasound is beneficial for a wide range of issues, including

  • strains
  • golfer’s elbow
  • and many back issues
  • tendinitis
  • Muscle Pain
  • Ligament Issues
  • osteoarthritis,
  • myofascial pain,
  • carpal tunnel syndrome

While it is not effective for all chronic pain conditions, it’s most useful for conditions where the muscle tissue has been affected. You may also benefit from ultrasound therapy if you have muscle or ligament injuries. If you are suffering from any of the above conditions or aren’t sure what your options are, do not hesitate to reach out to our friendly, highly trained team of chiropractors at Effective Chiropractic in Lanham, MD.
